Two people were killed and 18 people were injured in the incident. The suspect is being charged with second-degree murder with a firearm. It is unclear if there will be other charges against other individuals in the incident. The accused suspect was denied bond on Monday and will be held in jail until the next court appearance scheduled for Thursday. (apnews.com, wtsp.com)
Ybor businesses push back against heavy police presence: Small businesses became frustrated with heavy police presence after the Ybor City shooting, with some owners concerned they could lose business on one of the busiest weekends of the year, amid record inflation and costs. The chef and manager at Stone Soup Company said there was not enough police presence for the weekend, comparing crowds to the Super Bowl. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw and City of Tampa Mayor Jane Castor both dispute that there was not enough police in Ybor. (wusf.org)

I dined at Umu Japanese & Thai in Wesley Chapel on Saturday night at 2653 Bruce B Downs Blvd. I rarely make it over to Wesley Chapel these days, but the food there was truly delicious. I am going to write a full review of my experience, but I wanted to share this excellent sushi assortment first made by Chef Will that includes toro, salmon belly, and wagyu. If you haven’t checked it out and are doing some shopping near Wiregrass Mall, I recommend it.
Notes:
Creative Loafing is reporting that Seminole Heights’ Flocale food hall has officially closed. (cltampa.com)
U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor: “I am saddened and angry to see horrific scenes of the Ybor City shooting on what was a fun-filled Saturday night. Tampa is a safe city, but guns are too easily available to people who shouldn’t have them.” (x.com)
City of Tampa Mayor Jane Castor: “Yet again, a senseless loss of life by those choosing to settle a dispute with firearms. Lives lost and others forever changed. To what end? The Tampa Police Department had 50 officers deployed in the area at the time, so this is not a law enforcement issue. Bad decisions made in a split second and the proliferation of readily available guns are responsible for these almost daily incidents. We can affect one half of this equation.” (x.com)
